Solar Wind / Magnetosphere / Aurora
Aurora
Charged particles stream from the Sun at ~400 km/s. Earth's dipole magnetic field deflects them — except at the polar cusps, where they funnel into the atmosphere and excite atoms. The glow is the same mechanism as a neon sign. Southward IMF Bz triggers magnetic reconnection, unlocking the Dungey cycle and unleashing brilliant aurorae.
